Leadership Comparision Between Jamestown and Today

PRINT RESOURCES: NON-FICTION:

          Jamestown/John Smith

dezmembrari masini

1607 : a new look at Jamestown, Karen E. Lange

http://tinyurl.com/rczfnp

Read review that talks about how new archaeological evidence sheds new light on relationship between colonists and Native Americans.  Book uses actors dressed in period clothing to depict the events.

Jamestown, Virginia (Turning Points in U.S. History)

http://www.amazon.com/Jamestown-Virginia-Turning-Points-History/dp/076142122X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242965656&sr=1-1

Reviewers like as it has lots of pictures (one on each double page spread), accurate information written simply without dumbing down.

Jamestown: America's First Permanent English Settlement, Carol Marsh

http://www.amazon.com/Jamestown-Americas-Permanent-Settlement-Milestones/dp/0635063239/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1242970008&sr=1-2

Jamestown Trivia: Flabbergasting Facts for Kids... and Adults! Carol Marsh

http://www.amazon.com/Jamestown-Trivia-Flabbergasting-Permanent-Settlement/dp/0635063174/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1242970008&sr=1-3

John Smith Escapes Again! Rosalyn Schanzer

http://www.amazon.com/Smith-Escapes-Again-Rosalyn-Schanzer/dp/0792259300/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242965499&sr=1-1

Well researched, strong reviews and captivatingly written to grab kids attention about the life, travels and adventures of John Smith.

Rediscovering Jamestown, Cobblestone

http://tinyurl.com/oghym8

Smith : John Smith and the settlement of Jamestown, Robin S. Doak

http://tinyurl.com/qursub

Gr 4-6; Discusses motivations and explorations of JS and the impact on Native American's lives.

The Mystery at Jamestown: First Permanent English Colony in America! (Real Kids, Real Places), Carol Marsh

http://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Jamestown-Permanent-English-America/dp/0635063158/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1242970008&sr=1-1

The Jamestown Colony (Let Freedom Ring), Gayle Worland

http://www.amazon.com/Jamestown-Colony-Let-Freedom-Ring/dp/0736844791/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242966093&sr=1-1

I added this on as it is for grades 3-4 - might be good for lower end readers, though reviewers say decent information written with choppy sentences.

The Jamestown Colony (We the People), Brendan January

http://www.amazon.com/Jamestown-Colony-We-People/dp/0756500435/ref=pd_sim_b_13

Sounds like a very readable text for grades 3-5. Downside is that they leave out Native Americans' perspectives on settlers and Lewis and Clark expedition.

You wouldn't want to be an American colonist!  Jacqueline Morley

http://tinyurl.com/qpmlga

Great book for its illustrations and catchy language - not sure, if at all, on Jamestown, but good one for the library collection.

     Modern US Government

How the U.S. Government Works, Syl Sobel

http://www.amazon.com/How-U-S-Government-Works-Sobel/dp/0764111116/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242967487&sr=1-2

Series well liked by kids and reviewers both.  Presents information clearly and with engaging illustrations.

Out And About At City Hall (Field Trips)

http://www.amazon.com/About-City-Hall-Field-Trips/dp/140481146X/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242968825&sr=1-7

Definitely looks a bit perkier than most books on this topic.  Check out this link to look at the pages:  http://tinyurl.com/o6laxr

What's a City Council? Nancy Harris

http://www.amazon.com/Whats-Council-First-Guide-Government/dp/1403495157/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c

Not sure if this is too simplified or specific for what you are looking for, but thought I'd bring it to your attention.  No reviews.

What Are the Parts of Government? (My American Government), William David Thomas

http://www.amazon.com/What-Are-Parts-Government-American/dp/0836888677/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242968491&sr=1-1

This book and others in the series have good reviews which say they have clear writing and accessible format for ages 9-12.  Starts with personalized story and then connects to topic at hand, though from the outside looking in, these seem a bit on the boring side.

The City Mayor (First Facts) Terri Degezelle

http://www.amazon.com/City-Mayor-First-Facts/dp/0736836853/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242968113&sr=1-25

I couldn't find reviews, but looks like a basic book on mayor's job.  Also the title "City Council" by same author.  Seem a bit dreary but you may need it for basic info.

PRINT RESOURCES: FICTION

My America: Our Strange New Land, Elizabeth's Jamestown Colony Diary, Patricia Hermes

From the Dear America series, these could be used as lit circle books.

Season of Promise: Elizabeth's Jamestown Colony Diary, Patricia Hermes

http://www.amazon.com/Season-Promise-Elizabeths-Jamestown-Colony/dp/0439272068/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242966251&sr=1-1

From the Dear America series, though this one may be hard to get as it is an older one.

Surviving Jamestown: The Adventures of Young Sam Collier, Gail Karwoski

http://www.amazon.com/Surviving-Jamestown-Adventures-Young-Collier/dp/1561452394/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242966590&sr=1-1

For a bit more advanced readers (gr 5-7) told from a boy's perspective who is John Smith's page.  Has maps.  Looks like a good story!

Check out this site for lots of fabulous lesson plans for your grade level and topic. For example, I used the drop down menu to select grades 3-5 and then Civics: Community and these were the lesson plans and resources attached.  The great thing here is that they incorporate primary source materials that are a click away.
